[Hikaru had really tried that first night to sleep by himself but he hadn't been able to fall asleep, a dark and empty room felt threatening. It wasn't even half the size of his room back in their world and it made him feel closed in. Since Hikaru could remember, he had shared a room with Kaoru. Entirely by choice because their place had more than enough rooms but they had made the decision to push their beds together because it was more comfortable that way.
And now as Hikaru stares up at the ceiling, feeling anxious because he's alone. Maybe he has Tamaki and he won't admit how grateful he is for him but he isn't his twin. But he is his friend and Hikaru knows that if he were to go to his bed, Tamaki wouldn't even judge him. Wouldn't make fun of him at all and okay he would be weird. He would make some dumb comment about it but he wouldn't make Hikaru feel dumb because he apparently can't sleep by himself. It doesn't take long for Hikaru to make up his mind and go on his way to Tamaki's bedroom, opening the door and quickly getting into the bed. It's late enough at night that he hopes Tamaki is in a deep enough sleep not to wake up because he's exhausted and he just wants to sleep.
And even if it isn't Kaoru, it's somebody he cares about and he knows cares about him. And that's something and it's nice enough in its own way to brush away his anxiety. To let him begin to relax just enough so he can sleep.]
❰ similarly, tamaki had a hard time settling down for the night. the room is indeed cramped, and in the dark? it feels like the walls jump towards him a meter. he can see the positive in things, but so many aspects of this scenario make tamaki feel genuinely at a loss and uncomfortable. as such, getting relaxed enough to finally doze off...well, it takes quite a while.
it feels like he's only had his eyes closed for a few moments before he feels something rustle his comforter. the bed is small -- perhaps not for a normal seventeen year old, but he's used to a grandiose mattress built for ten. he'd be able to feel a pea underneath back home, so it's obvious that this has occurred in such a tiny space, and while he's basically floating in and out of consciousness. the sensation is heavy for a moment, feeling someone crawl into his bed. there's a moment of fright -- is this friend or foe that is slithering into his intimate bedchamber. after they settle in, it's apparent that they're just here to sleep, friend or otherwise.
though, he's not dumb -- there is a suspicion he has as to who has suddenly crawled in next to him. tamaki would lift an arm to sleepily move his sleep mask -- yes, he happened to find one -- but that would ruin the moment he assumes is being cultivated here. and, based on what he has come up with in his head, correct or not, this is...comforting. a little sleep over, and he didn't even have to initiate it.
the only indication tamaki gives at the moment that he's at all lucid is a slight shift closer, arm moving close to where hikaru is next to him. not enough to touch his bedmate, but just a subtle closeness. don't worry, hikaru. it might initially spook you, but you're safe to fall asleep. ❱
[Part of Hikaru worries when he realizes he did wake Tamaki up but really, the good part about Tamaki is he always knows what somebody else needs. Anybody else may have questioned him about missing his brother but Tamaki knows better than to make an obvious statement like that.
Hikaru doesn't make any movement but seeing the arm close really is enough. To see somebody acknowledge him and want to comfort him. It's good and he smiles in the darkness, closing his eyes. For the hundredth time since arriving, he's glad it's Tamaki that was stuck here in this weird place with him if he couldn't have Kaoru. It's from pure exhaustion that makes him pass out immediately and later he will complain about the bed being too small and uncomfortable.
But right now, Tamaki will have to deal with the fact that Hikaru isn't a very graceful sleepover. He sprawls and kicks, barely staying in one position for long. It's by a pure miracle that Tamaki doesn't end up on the floor due to a stray leg but he definitely will awaken to have Hikaru having taken up most of the mattress with absolutely no concept of personal space. Now Tamaki is one of the few blessed with the knowledge that Hikaru is prone to cuddling in his sleep. You either end up kicked out of the bed or being clung to.
At the least, this is probably the most peaceful look he's had on his face since arriving. If mouth open and slightly snoring counts as peaceful.]
❰ if this was just a simple sleepover back home, the trashing and knee in his abdomen might have angered him enough to bash hikaru with a pillow, yell and throw a fit. here...he gets a free pass, at least right now. after a few limbs flail against him, tamaki rolls to the edge of the mattress, half-asleep and tired enough to doze off again pretty quickly.
tamaki wakes up eventually, a few hours later. he's so accustomed to waking up early, or with the sun filtering through his window. he can't see that it's bright outside, but it's like he just knows, even if this is a new world entirely. when he lifts his mask, ready to start his second day in this interesting place -- and he's greeted with an interesting view, back to the wall. he's on his side, head close to hanging off the side of the bed as his body fights for what little space he's given. the culprit is one half of the hitachiin twins, clinging to tamaki's core with all of his weight, somehow.
he can't even be annoyed, with how distressed hikaru looked earlier in the day. this is certainly a more comforted expression he's wearing, even if it will be gone soon after he wakes up.
for as devilish and fiendish as the twins can be, especially towards tamaki himself, they will always be two of his most important comfort people. there's a certain bitterness in knowing he's also uncomfortable here, truthfully even more so. even if being disconnected from his "family" breaks tamaki's heart, even he can't compare that to being separated from your other half.
it would be unthinkable for him to shake hikaru awake seeing him in this state, but tamaki does stroke his hair a little bit. ❱
[It's only slight but it's enough to begin to wake Hikaru up. He knows he's up against somebody and that isn't unusual. Mostly asleep, he thinks he might be with Kaoru in their room. But it doesn't take long for Hikaru to realize that this person isn't Kaoru and this most definitely isn't his room. Then he remembers where he is and he remembers going to Tamaki's bed when he couldn't stand to be alone any longer.
Hikaru doesn't want to open his eyes because once he does, it's over. There's absolutely no way they won't somehow destroy this. Hikaru tells himself Tamaki will say something dumb and make it weird but in reality, it's most likely Hikaru that will do something. After all, Tamaki has had the sense to just let Hikaru lay here and not complain. If the roles were reversed, Hikaru definitely would have whined about Tamaki coming into his bed and taking up most of it.
Tamaki was kind and maybe too kind for his own good but Hikaru respected it even if he would never say that out loud.
It's only a couple of minutes before Hikaru loses the battle and opens his eyes, trying very hard to avoid Tamaki's.] Don't make this weird.
[Didn't he know that by saying that, he would be the one making it weird? No, he wouldn't.]
❰ yes, this onus for the weirdness is suddenly on him -- or it would be if tamaki thought this was at all weird, totally understanding exactly why hikaru decided to crawl into bed with him. ❱
It's alright, Hikaru. ❰ and for a split second, maybe hikaru can believe that. but it's only a few moments before, ❱ It's perfectly normal for a son to want to sleep with his father from time to time.
❰ just ask yourself: would it be tamaki if he wasn't like this? ❱
[It is just like Tamaki. Later, he may think back on it and laugh. At some moment, he will be grateful for Tamaki for not putting focus on what's actually going on here and be comforted by the fact that Tamaki did simply let him into his bed and never made a big deal about it. It would be easy to make fun of him.
But right now?
Right now he sighs and gets out of the bed because that seems like the only correct response.]
do you ever play sports...?? i'm trying to get enough people to play some games from my world if you wanna join us. might get a little intense but it's probably not dangerous.... it'll be fun!
well, there's a game called kuai ball... my friend said it's similar to a game called volleyball. he's from japan too?? maybe you know volleyball?? that one's a team game
and there's a children's game from the Fire Nation we're gonna play too, that one's individual, but it's not ready yet. i think the twins would be good at that one specifically... i asked them too
i do know volleyball, even if i don't partake. the concept of the rules should be easy for me to grasp onto!
i'm very intrigued by this children's game (i am a big fan!!!!!!!) but understand if you want to keep it secret. it shall be a pleasant surprise for when the time comes (´ ∀ ` *)
though i must warn you, games with the twins can get very intense!
❰ especially when tamaki is there and suddenly nothing else matters other than besting those two. ❱
yeah the rules are really easy... just score the ball on the other team's side of the net ten times by kicking and hitting it. pretty normal easy game.
but i want you to be on my team so you don't have to play against my sister, ok? :) she's very good at kuai ball, so we'll win, ha i don't think hikaru and kaoru want to play kuai ball anyway
it's not a secret, my friend is just making supplies for it. do you want the children's game to be a secret.....?? is it more fun for you that way? it's an intense game... it's about strategy. the twins would be so good at it, help me convince them
interesting! i don't think anyone kicks the ball in volleyball, so i'm curious to see the releation.
and yes, your sister! i have yet to meet her officially, so now would be a good time. between her skill and my athletic abilities, i'm sure we'll have a victory in the bag! (i also believe i can convince the twins; i have a way with them ^^)
the game doesn't have to be secret at all! i just assumed with no details given it would be some kind of surprise. perhaps even more fair that way, if strategy is involved? if it's maniacal or devious, i'm sure the twins will join in with or without my prodding.
yes we will definitely win. that's why i convinced her to play. we play seriously; just do what azula says and don't get on her nerves..... you'll meet her. i'm the nice one. :)
as to kids' game... it's a game that involves hiding and setting traps in front of your hiding spot for when the seeker comes near you. and then kind of like tag if they find you and don't set off your trap.
but like i said... it's a little intense. this is a Fire Nation kids' game.
there is rarely a lady who doesn't find me charming, and i'm sure your sister won't join the ranks of those who do not.
that sounds like a game the twins would invent, in all honesty, so i'm sure they'll get involved. hikaru especially will revel in seeing me fall into some trap they set.
.....good luck. watching you trying to charm azula will be fun in itself. oh and Azula is gonna play hide and explode with us as well, so between her and the twins, watch out, ha...
my friend Gokudera is making all the bombs. back home in japan and italy, he's an expert bomber in the mafia. so we're just waiting for him to finish the "explode" part of hide and explode..... :)
[ Ah. There's where he lost the twins. Bombs. Explosions. Mafia hitmen. He just means to imply Gokudera's trustworthy with dynamite. But his promise that it's safe probably just makes it sound dangerous... For Zuko, these are words intended to inspire comfort, not concern. But only Azula and Zuko see no problem with children playing with bombs. Meantime, Hikaru and Kaoru are now fairly convinced they're living with an arsonist. Zuko's desperation, however playful, to persuade them all to play with explosives... is a logical cause for suspicion, really. ]
[ Zuko's been on the fence for a short while on approaching his roommate for... advice, he supposed, but it didn't feel quite like he wanted advice from Tamaki. That seemed dubious. It's an uncomfortable question to ask, and he's not even sure what he's asking for, exactly. Information? Experience? Opinion? Insight. He wants insight. He's felt conflicted for a few weeks now, and it's only getting more confusing. He knows nothing about this stuff, and Kaoru once implied that Tamaki knows plenty. He figured they all probably do, actually; he had definitely wondered about the twins... before wondering about himself, that is. And Tamaki is far more, uh, approachable for sensitive issues... Zuko at least knew not to expect any mocking jokes or jabs from the blonde, at least. Not that that left him much more comfortable, really. He's no idea what to expect. But it's better to breech an awkward topic with someone more experienced than he is, than to keep suffering by wondering on his own.
He's been lying in his bed, bedroom door open with view into the living room, deep in thought. He'd noticed Tamaki plop down on his regal white chaise longue a while ago, the other prince looking natural in his spot as usual. It took Zuko some time to work up the nerve, not wanting to ambush his roommate right as he'd sat down to relax, obviously. But after a while of thought, some silent mental rehearsing with no guidance but instinct, he figures today's the day to ask. He steps out into the living room a bit cautiously, nodding to the other with a little wave as he walks up. As he'd planned. ]
Hey!
[ He sits on the edge of another fancy couch beside the chaise longue, visibly tense. It takes him pause before he opens up the conversation he's finally built up the chutzpah to open. He makes good effort to keep eye contact to show his sincerity and connect and all, but really, already he feels his stomach sinking. ]
Are you free? Can I, uh— Can I talk to you? About something kind of, um... personal?
tamaki gokudera and i drank some of your tea, i hope you dont mind he shared a good idea he used to do at home its called "poor man's punch" there's still leftover, there's a pitcher in the kitchen, you should have some
❰ all of this supposed information zuko knows concerning tamaki is certainly...interesting. not that tamaki has the slightest idea, and thus no one can easily correct all these misconceptions. thanks to the twins, both innocent parties are about to collide...
having returned from work not to long before, and freshly showered, tamaki has nothing but time for zuko as he's approached. for as much of an airhead as he can seem, the host is very good at reading people -- most people, anyway. zuko he's found to be somewhat simple in that case, even if he doesn't have a lot of context for the exact scenarios the prince has been through.
thus, his expression is soft and curious, legs crossed as he leans forward slightly to signal his open ear. ❱
gokudera said it was something he used to do at home to save money he was too poor to live in an apartment with a fridge so he used to consolidate all his beverages into one so it would be more cost effective he said it’s a popular trick, this is how many real commoners drink this stuff... a new commoner custom to try, itll be an authentic experience for you.....
[ Zuko may have a near constant terseness about him, but he’s a transparent guy emotionally — and plenty emotional. Tonight was no exception. He takes a big, deep, not-very-calming breath before beginning his well-planned spiel. Except that’s not what comes out. He’d rehearsed this conversation and now it was all up in the wind. Shit. He’s winging it, trying to grasp on to bits he’d wanted to use from his rehearsal while completely spontaneous words came out instead. He’s bouncing his leg as he talks at first, but catches himself, instead reaching into his pants pocket idly and producing a... pocket lighter? with a tacky blossoming cherry tree design on it. He just fidgets with the lighter nervously for now, rolling it around in his hand as he rambles. This was not going to plan and he hadn’t even asked anything yet. Fuck. ]
So, um... I know you’re the president of your club, and you’re the most popular host or whatever — I mean, not that your club is uh, well— and in any case I know it’s just girls who go there, right? B-But anyway! You know a lot about... romance, and stuff, that’s very different than where I’m from... Some things that aren’t normal there are okay here... And in your world too, I’ve heard. And even though it’s technically not the same world as yours, or I don’t think it is, although it’s still called Japan, I um— I have another Japanese friend and I don’t really know his views on romance at all, really, like in general... But I don’t want to ask him directly cuz— I’ve never talked to him about that kind of thing. So, I was wondering what kind of insight... you could give me. About romance. Like that.
❰ tamaki's gaze remains patient and level as zuko prepares himself -- despite his usually over the top presence, which never truly fades completely, he's still a guy who knows when to get serious and calm. as his friend begins, there's a bloom of pride; a small smile appears on tamaki's face as his eyes close into slight nods. true, true. zuko has come to realize that he is something of an expert when it comes to the sensibilities and aesthetics of romance. he's played matchmaker and untangled a number of relationship threads in his day. ❱
I'll say that it's always good to be specific when it comes to matters of the heart, where there's one person in question. The question that's being begged right now is do you want to know about romance in general...or as it relates to this one person in question?
❰ the pronouns used aren't lost on tamaki, either. hmm. he's never really tried to play love guru to a same-sex situation, but perhaps it will be a test of his skills as a masterful host. nor did he realize that zuko was a homosexual side character had such inclinations. you learn something new every day! ❱ In either case, I'm capable of offering some insightful advice!
[ He doesn’t know what he’s asking. He knows what he wants to ask but it’s too awkward to be direct about. He’s floundering inside. ]
Technically... if you put it like that, there are two people. I was only asking about one, the other isn’t here but— general advice would apply to her, too, I guess...
[ He still is plagued by ill feelings for how he broke up with Mai — what happened the last time he saw her... It broke his heart some nights. Other nights he’d lie in bed with her portrait and daydream like she was there to sleep beside him, sorely missing her in a place like this. But he’s not trying to get into all that... He has his deliberate, uncomfortable focus in mind. ]
❰ hmm...what tamaki is getting from this is that zuko's heart is being pulled in two different directions. perhaps a new love interest has arrived on the horizon, in this strange and alien world...but there is someone else he loves back home, who he still yearns for, and yet perhaps absence is not making the heart grow fonder...?
it's a very dramatic thought! but this kind of serious advice requires a very serious mind. ❱
I will tell you, Zuko, that romance is a very broad topic. It's hard to be so general, in fact, when there are so many aspects and types of love I can describe to you! There's such a big difference, for instance, in trying to be romantically appealing in general versus trying to win the heart of one particular person.
❰ tamaki crosses his legs, expression serious; he will do all he can for zuko, but he needs more to work with...details, desires! ❱ You'll have to narrow your scope if you want any kind of advice from me...but once you do, I'm sure I'll have the correct course of action for you!
