Tamaki is extremely personable when you encounter him, be you a man or woman, child or adult. Whoever you are, he's going to sweet talk you, treat you well — he's got the money to spend to make you happy, the looks to make you swoon, and the silky soft words that will make you want to listen to him forever. Normally, it can be assumed that people like this are looking to get something out of their niceties; quid pro quo, tit for tat. Tamaki, however, genuinely wants to make people smile and offer them a good experience, whatever the situation may be. Whether it be doing nice things for them or whispering sweet nothings to them, Tamaki is always willing and wanting to make someone's day. On the flip side, Tamaki has a hugely inflated ego, thinking that anyone who enjoys him has good taste and anyone who insults him causes him great distress. He considers himself to be wonderful and a blessing to the earth, but not in a demeaning way...he thinks most everyone is wonderful! But if people are angels, he's the second coming. If people are tulips, he is a magnificent white rose.

Being the Host Club's founding member, he considers himself the king of the hosts and the best at what the purpose of the club is. Known as the "Princely type", he's incredibly good at being a romantic, never really going as far to kiss or show too much affection to girls, but leaving them wanting more every time they leave. He's exceedingly good at flattery, etiquette, small talk, and giving girls just what they want. It's comparable to a housewives obsession with harlequin romance novels: they long for someone who will sweep them away and ensure them that they are loved, no matter what they look like or their personality, and that's exactly what he delivers to them. While he doesn't love all women romantically, he lives to make them happy, no matter who they are. That's his biggest appeal.

Tamaki is a very...extreme person, in a lot of regards. He's emotive, mostly because he's one of the more comical characters of the series. When he's sad, he's crying buckets. When he's angry, he's pulling at his hair and stomping around, ranting and raving. When he's embarrassed, his whole face is bright red. He's extremely loud and sure of himself, confident in his looks, ideas, and practically everything to the point where it's annoying — and yet it's rare to find someone who doesn't somehow succumb to one of his numerous charms, mostly because he's so utterly genuine. He's extremely good at sports, playing the piano, and of course his host work, but sometimes his outlandish ideas aren't exactly the most successful or end up as wacky mishaps. Normally the rich girls and boys of Ouran are enamored by his seemingly brilliant plans and productions, but to Haruhi and the reader/viewer, they come off as strange and obnoxiously extravagant. He's not above spending tons of money to turn the Host Club's room into exotic getaways, getting elephants for parades, and purchasing lavish food and tableware for the guests that partake in the club's services. This isn't just because Tamaki is rich, although he is one of the richest students at the school, but it's because he's willing to spend whatever amount to entertain people and to bring a smile to their face.

Alternatively, Tamaki can be harsh when he needs to be, and possesses some unquestionably negative traits. He knows how to dole out tough love, and the twins, Kyouya, and Haruhi have all been on the receiving end of it. He's very quick to preach at someone who is doing something he perceives as wrong. He can be rather defensive of his ideas and plans, but that's because he comes up with such good ones. When Tamaki gets sad or depressed, he will usually curl up into a ball and squat in a corner, disassociating himself from the world and those around him. This will often happen when he doesn't get his way, gets criticism, or is in a fight with someone. He's also very competitive, especially with the twins, and they will often set up games for themselves, usually revolving around winning Haruhi's affection.

Being naive goes right along with how eccentric Tamaki really is. He's extremely jaded when it comes to certain things, like how he feels about Haruhi or how the things rich people do (and the things he does) are viewed by the common class. A lot of things, especially his romantic feelings, are extremely noticeable and apparent, but he has no idea of them (though neither does Haruhi). He acts extremely childish around his friends and those he's close to, but he does know how to stop when it comes to business, his Grandmother, and being around authority figures. Tamaki would enjoy being his playful self all the time, but being the son of a rich man and being part of a very prominent family means that he has to wear the face of the dutiful son from time to time. Tamaki isn't the brightest about his own feelings, but he's very in tune with how other people feel.

Tamaki has a very strong attachment to family values. Upon Haruhi entering the Host Club, it's seen that Tamaki gives the members family titles, treating Haruhi (the girl he loves) more like a daughter. It's his emotional defense mechanism, mostly because he doesn't want to burn the bridges of the relationships and would rather stay as a family than watch his friends go into any relationships together, including himself. Because of his relationship with his own family (he's not allowed to see his mother, he has a strained and teasing relationship with his father, and his grandmother hates him), he's created a family out of his friends. Once someone comes into his flock, he'll consider them one of his family, depending on whatever role he places on them, regardless of their age or gender. Because Tamaki used to be friendless, he created the host club to be surrounded by people and for him to be friends with the members. It's virtually impossible for him to dislike someone; the only reason he could is because they have done something very wrong, and even then he'll forgive them. Tamaki is easy to befriend, mostly because he can see the good in everyone and wishes to make them happy and give them a friend as glorious as he, and to get a friend as glorious as them. Tamaki leaves people with a certain feeling. No matter how obnoxious he is, his kindhearted personality and his need to help others eventually wears people down into loving him. Even though he's tiring, all of the Host Club members adore him and have him to thank for the bonds they're developed and grown with one another.

Tamaki has an incredible hobby of studying the commoner diet and lifestyle, observing some of the things Haruhi and her father do, sort as if they were wild animals. Commoner-isms fascinate, amuse, and excite him. One of his more incredible hobbies is cataloging and trying various commoner cuisine, sometimes even making scrapbooks dedicated to his research. He also collects toys packaged with food items and keeps them in a glass cabinet, hailing them as exotic treasures. He loves playing commoner games, going to commoner stores, and adores simply watching and interacting with the "simple folk". While a lot of the Host Club is rude to the lower and middle classes, Tamaki's behaviour towards them comes off as more of a bewilderment and appreciation, though Haruhi often takes it to be insulting right along with the rest of the Host Club's benign comments.
